On the occasion of the 2026 European Heritage Days, on Sunday, September 27, the historic church of San Cassiano di Controne in Bagni di Lucca will open its doors to visitors with a special event sponsored by the local museum. The event, titled "Geometries of Polychrome Marble: The Inlaid Flooring of San Cassiano di Controne," will begin at 3:30 PM and will be led by expert Gianluigi Viscione, followed by an evocative organ concert and a closing aperitif at sunset.
An early medieval jewel in the Lima Valley, nestled between history and artistic masterpieces.
First mentioned in a document from 772, the church of San Cassiano is the oldest documented in the Lima Valley and a national monument since the 19th century. The Romanesque building preserves intact elements of inestimable historical and artistic value:
The flooring and decorations: The rare original polychrome marble inlay flooring, the sculpted ornamental motifs and an ancient Islamic ceramic basin from the 11th century walled into the facade.
The Museum of San Cassiano: Opened in 2012, the museum houses extraordinary works including the famous equestrian group of San Martino a Cavallo, a masterpiece of fifteenth-century sculpture attributed to the early work of Jacopo della Quercia.
